Codepoint was founded in 2019 and is an early-stage venture focused on commercial launch of its products in the U.S., China, and Europe. The company builds upon the founders' expertise in Location of Things, creating the CP-Flex platform and Cora devices together with ecosystem of leading partners. Codepoint is privately funded.
Team Members
Michael B. Mathews, Ph.D. – President and Co-Founder
Dr. Mathews is a veteran entrepreneur and technologist with over 25 years of experience in positioning and wireless industries. Recently, he was V.P. of Location Technology for Comtech Telecommunications, which acquired his previous startup Loctronix Corp in 2015. Founding the company in 2007, Mathews led Loctronix as CEO/CTO developing advanced technologies in indoor positioning. Prior to that, he was the President/GM of Engenex Technologies and CTO for InfoMove, Inc. Mathews has numerous patents and has been at the forefront of location technology development including expendable GPS, off-board navigation, location sensor fusion, and positioning with signals of opportunity. Mathews received his Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering Sciences from the University of Colorado.
Zhong Li – V.P. Business Development and Co-Founder
Mr. Li has more than 25 years experience in electronics industry and global markets. He was VP of Marketing and Applications for advanced communication product group at Semtech. Before that, he was director of marketing at Intersil Corp, and marketing manager for semiconductor startup Synergy Semiconductor which was acquired by Micrel Semiconductor. Zhong started his career as a semiconductor process engineer at Cypress Semiconductor.
Derek Steffey – Device Lead and Principal Engineer
Mr. Steffey leads Codepoint's device program providing embedded firmware and electronics design expertise. Guiding internal development and ecosystem partners, he ensures our devices meet the highest standards of function and performance. Steffey was previously a senior electrical engineer at Data I/O Corporation, having more than 20+ years design, development, and manufacturing experience. He holds several patents and was a JEDEC JC-64 working group member for the eMMC and UFS memory standards.
Brian Salisbury – Business Advisor and Product Marketing
Brian Salisbury has more than 35 years of experience in the mobile industry, spanning semiconductor, system, network and services sectors. He was VP Product Management at Comtech, Sr. Director at Qualcomm / Snaptrack, President of Wireless Services at Metricom / Ricochet and COO at Bell ARDIS.

Keith Bhatia, Ph.D. – CEO, SS8
Dr. Keith Bhatia has more than 25 years of leadership experience in both the telecom and IT markets. He has served as senior vice president and general manager at Comtech generating growth and executing acquisitions. Prior to that, he was responsible for new business acquisition and product management at Neustar, Movius and ADC.
Rob Palfreyman – Location Technology Entrepreneur
Rob Palfreyman was previously CEO/co-founder at sensewhere. He brings 25 years’ experience in the wireless, chip and location markets, successfully fundraising and closing business globally with companies like Tencent and Motorola.
Gary Tu – GM of Changhong Research Lab
Managing Director of Changhong North America, a serial entrepreneur with two successful start-up ventures in China, Sr. VP of Global Business Development at Aicent, and engineering manager at Motorola.
